Hungry Planet: Families in Kuwait and Mali

Thank you for visiting my blog! In our class, each of us has been reading chapters of the book "Hungry Planet". My chapter was about two families and I would like to introduce them.

                                  Kuwait: The Al Hagan family

This is the Al Hagan family and their two Nepal servants on the left. Servants!? Yes. In this wealthy country of oil, it has become quite common to have domestic help

This is their food expenditure for one week. Kuwaiti cuisine is a fusion of Arabian, Iranian, and Mesopotamian cuisines. They often have fish and biriyani which is a traditional Kuwait food.

Mali: The Natomo family

This is the Natomo family from Mali. The father Soumana, has two wives, Fatoumata and Toure who take turns cooking each day. Polygamy represents an aspect of Malian culture and religionIt is legally performed in Mali, although not practiced by all the people.

This is the food expenditure for one week. As you could see, because of the climate, much of the food is dry. Also, the food expenditure is really inexpensive.

Learning about the families from the book not only taught me the food culture but also the differences in culture in each country. I wish I could visit the countries one day. Thank you for stopping by!!!
